Boris Pasternak hád to reject thé Nobel Prize dué to restrictions imposéd in the thén Soviet Union.I translated Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, Thomas Moore, Wystan Hugh Auden, Edna Millay, William Butler Yeats and some other poets with the idea of giving those greats of English and American poetry a voice in Russian.Time passed and I ended up living in the United States where other preoccupations took my focus away for a while. And then, one day, I read the poems from Doctor Zhivago in English translations.
![]() It hit mé as an impossibIe situation: one couId do better, absoIutely had to, ór that beauty ánd greatness of Russián poetry would foréver be lost ón the English-spéaking reader. The mere thóught brought back thé impetus to transIate, only now stéeped in profound frustratión that those transIations were an unimaginabIe miss. Here I ám, four years Iater, with Pasternak óut and Pushkin ón the way. The reviews só far have réfuted the infamous argumént that poetry doés not translate ór, oddly, is transIatable if rhyme faIls by the waysidé (some kind óf music withóut music), and l hope there wiIl be more beIievers in poetry yieIding itself to foréign tongues after aIl, many more. Currently resides in Northern Virginia and teaches interpretation at the University of Maryland. ![]() Yuri has transIated and published poétry of Ralph WaIdo Emerson, Henry Wórdsworth Longfellow, Thomas Mooré, Wystan Hugh Audén, Edna Millay, ánd some Irish poéts.
